What is it and how do we stop it?
We all know how our furniture is made, and how paper comes from trees, but are you aware how bad it really is? Deforestation refers to the decrease in forest areas across the world, which has its resources used for the benefit of manmade necessities. In other words, we are destroying the beauty of nature and all that live inside of it. In case you didn't know, animals are not re-homed when their habitat is destroyed - in fact, the destroyers do not care at all. Why would they? They get paid either way? Right?
Animals are forced to relocate themselves, and may end up travelling miles upon miles, just to have to do it again, if they even make it in the first place. It is estimated that within 100 years, there will be NO rainforests left. The extinction of beloved forest animals is iminent.
You may be thinking to yourself, what can we do? Well, the simple answer - Plant a tree where you can! It may not grow instantly, but with some love and care, with nature will play a large part in, you'll contribute to a large scheme to tackle this problem and repopulate the world as we know it, regardless of how small a contribution, our world needs you. Reduce your paper: The less people needing paper means that less paper will need to be made, that means less trees being destroyed!
Here are some other facts about the forests that you may not know:
- Forests cover around 30% of the entire Earth's land.
- 20% of the entire world's oxygen is produced in the Amazon forest.
- 44% of the junk mail we receive goes unopened.
- One and a half acres of forest is cut down every second - In perspective, that is around 20 football fields being lost every minute.
- Half of the world's tropical forests has already been cleared.
- An average person in the united States uses more than 700 pounds of paper every year.
